  57. 1.1 Hardware Requirements

  59. CHinDEX can be used on ATARI ST/STE computers with a high-rez
  60. monitor (SM 124),  at least one  Megabyte of RAM and a double
  61. sided disk drive. A hard disk is recommended.

  65. To run CHinDEX the following files are necessary:

  82. 1.3 Installing the Demo Version

  84. To install  CHinDEX  on a hard disk,  just copy all files and
  85. folders  mentioned in  1.2 to a  folder on the  hard disk. If
  86. you want to install  CHinDEX  on floppy disk,  copy the files
  87. mentioned in 1.2 to a double sided disk.

  90. 2 How to use CHinDEX
  91.  
  92. 2.1 Starting the Program
  93.  
  94. Start CHinDEX with a double click on  "CHINDEX.PRG". I t will
  95. take CHinDEX about seven  seconds from hard disk  (40 seconds
  96. from floppy disk) to initialize. If files are missing CHinDEX
  97. will produce an error message and quit.  After initialization
  98. CHinDEX will show up with the default method (cf. 2.5).

  101. 2.2 Character Lookup Methods
  102.  
  103. 2.2.1 Radical Index
  104.  
  105. The  radical  index  used  in  CHinDEX  is  based on those of
  106. "Xinhua Cidian"  and   "Xiandai Hanyu Cidian".  Some  of  the
  107. radicals of the  "Chinese-English Dictionary" are not in this
  108. index.
  109.  
  110. Radicals of the same  stroke count are  not ordered  -  as is
  111. usually done in printed dictionaries - according to the first
  112. stroke but according to radical productivity.
  113.  
  114. A number  of characters  (several hundreds!)  with  ambiguous
  115. radicals  can  be  found  under  more than one radical in the 
  116. radical index of CHinDEX.
  117.  
  118. Clicking  on  a radical will  produce the character selection
  119. window (cf. 2.3)  containing all characters with the selected
  120. radical ordered according to the number of remaining strokes.
  121. Selecting  one  of  the  characters  leads  to  the character
  122. information window (cf. 2.4).

  125. 2.2.2 Pinyin Index
  126.  
  127. The Pinyin syllable is entered  via the keyboard  (on English
  128. keyboards use "v" instead of the umlauted "u"!) and confirmed
  129. by hitting the "RETURN" key or selecting the "OK" button.  As
  130. in many cases  only  the  syllable  but  not  the  tone  of a
  131. character is known,  the tone does  not have  to be  entered.
  132. However,  the  characters  in the  character selection window
  133. will be displayed according to their tone. If the tone of the
  134. desired character is known  it can be looked up in the proper
  135. line immediately.  Otherwise - as the character lists are all
  136. ordered dynamically according  to lookup  frequency  -  start
  137. looking for  the desired character  column-wise  from left to
  138. right.  Selecting a  character  leads  to  the  corresponding
  139. character information window (cf. 2.4).

  142. 2.2.3 Simplified Four Corner Index
  143.  
  144. The  four corner number  is  entered  via  the  keyboard  and
  145. confirmed  with  the  "RETURN" key.   Alternatively it can be
  146. entered by clicking on the graphemes of the  dialog form with
  147. the mouse  and  then clicking  on the "OK" button.  The fifth
  148. number of the original four corner method does not have to be
  149. entered.  Instead,  the characters  are ordered  according to
  150. lookup frequency in the character selection window (cf. 2.3).
  151. Selecting  a character leads  to the corresponding  character
  152. information window (cf. 2.4).

  155. 2.2.4 Stroke Index
  156.  
  157. The  stroke index  contains  characters  which  are  hard  to
  158. identify with the radical index.  They are ordered  according
  159. to total stroke count in the character selection window  (cf.
  160. 2.3). Selecting a character  leads to the  character informa-
  161. tion window (cf. 2.4).

  164. 2.3 The Character Selection Window
  165.  
  166. Besides the selection of  characters with the mouse all other
  167. window operations  like  changing the window area,  scrolling
  168. and  resizing  of  the window  are possible.  Clicking on the
  169. close button in the  upper left corner  of the window  causes
  170. CHinDEX to return to the default method.
  171.  
  172. All  character lists  displayed  in  the  character selection
  173. window are dynamic, i.e. frequently looked-up characters will
  174. make their way to the head of the list,  rare characters will
  175. move to the list's end.

  178. 2.4 The Character Information Window
  179.  
  180. In  the  demo version  of  CHinDEX  the character information
  181. window shows all  the pronunciations  of level one characters
  182. of  the  People's  Republic's  GB   code (according to "Hanzi
  183. shuxing zidian", Beijing: Shumu wenxian chubanshe, 1988 ) and
  184. question marks for level two characters.  The full version of
  185. shows ALL pronunciations of ALL GB characters, as well as the
  186. exact page number(s) in either  "Das neue Chinesisch-Deutsche
  187. Woerterbuch" or "A Chinese-English Dictionary" (both Beijing:
  188. Shangwu yinshuguan, 1985).
  189.  
  190. It  is  necessary  to  point  out  that there  are  about 230
  191. characters in  "Das neue Chinesisch-Deutsche Woerterbuch" (as
  192. well  as  in  "A Chinese-English Dictionary")  which  are  at
  193. present not included in CHinDEXes character set. On the other
  194. hand,  CHinDEX "knows" more than 900 characters which are not
  195. in those dictionaries.

  197. As  to  characters  with  more  than  one  pronunciation, the
  198. pronunciations  are  not  listed  alphabetically  but  rather
  199. according to their frequency.
  200.  
  201. The character information window can be closed by clicking on
  202. the close button in the upper left corner of the window or by
  203. hitting any key.  CHinDEX  will  then  return to  the default
  204. method (cf. 2.5).

  207. 2.5 Changing the Default Method
  208.  
  209. The default method can be changed with "SETUP.PRG".  Starting
  210. SETUP will  produce a menu in  which the  radical index,  the
  211. pinyin index  or  the  four corner index  can  be  chosen  as 
  212. default method.  The next time  CHinDEX is started the chosen
  213. method will be the default method.
  214.

  216. 3 CHinDEX as a Desk Accessory
  217.  
  218. CHinDEX can also be used as a Desk Accessory. Thus characters
  219. can be  "looked up"  while  for  instance  entering a Chinese
  220. translation into your word processor.
  221.  
  222. Since CHinDEX needs a lot of memory there should be more than
  223. one Megabyte  of RAM  if it is used as an accessory.  If  you
  224. happen to have only one megabyte of  RAM,  you should disable
  225. all  other  accessories  -  maybe  by  using  a  PD accessory
  226. switcher.  Otherwise  there might  not  be  enough memory for
  227. CHinDEX, the word processor and the text you are working on.
  228.  
  229. First "CHINDEX.PRG" must be renamed to "CHINDEX.ACC". Then it
  230. has to be copied  -  together with all  necessary  files  and
  231. folders  - to the boot partition of your hard disk.  (You can
  232. run  it  from  a  floppy too,  but  it doesn't  make too much
  233. sense.)

  235. After re-booting the system  CHinDEX will be available in the
  236. DESK menu of your GEM application.

  242. Desk accessories on the  ATARI  have the annoying property of
  243. possibly  causing  loss  of  data  of  other currently active
  244. applications if they should "crash".
  245.  
  246. CHinDEX  has  been  thoroughly  tested,  as  far  as  this is
  247. possible with a programm of its size  and complexity.  Never-
  248. theless, there may still be errors  in the program leading to
  249. "unexpected behaviour".

  251. NO WARRANTY AGAINST LOSS OF DATA CAN BE GIVEN!

  253. USE CHinDEX AS A DESK ACCESSORY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

  255. To minimize the risk of loosing a valuable data, make regular
  256. copies  of  your  texts  (some  word  processors  can do that
  257. automatically!)

  260. 4 Full Version of CHinDEX
  261.  
  262. The full version of CHinDEX  gives all pronunciations and the
  263. corresponding page numbers of the  characters in the diction-
  264. ary ("A Chinese-English Dictionary" or  "Das neue Chinesisch-
  265. Deutsche Woerterbuch") The amount of time (and nerves!) saved
  266. when  looking up  known as well  as unknown  characters  with
  267. CHinDEX is enormous!

  298.  
  299. For the future the following extensions of CHinDEX are planned:
  300.  
  301.  - Later on several special dictionaries could  be  included,
  302.    maybe  the   two-volume   "Chinese-English  Dictionary  of
  303.    Scientific and  Technical  Terms"  (Harbin:   Heilongjiang
  304.    Renmin Chubanshe, 1985)  and  "Langenscheidts  Chinesisch-
  305.    Deutscher Wortschatz Politik und Wirtschaft der VR China".

  307.  - In the  character information window  the  page numbers of
  308.    several dictionaries  could then be displayed  at the same
  309.    time.  ONE UNIFORM  INDEX  TO  SEVERAL  DICTIONARIES!  ONE
  310.    LOOKUP - SEVERAL DICTIONARIES!

  315. The demo version (and only the demo version!) of CHinDEX may
  316. be be freely copied and distributed under the following
  317. conditions:
  318.  
  319. a) Under no circumstances shall the copyright notices in
  320.    the program, its resources and documentation be removed.
  321.  
  322. b) This manual file or a hardcopy of it must be distributed
  323.    with the program.
  324.  
  325. c) The author can not assume any liability for any damages
  326.    that may arise from the use of this software.

  328. d) The author has no obligation to revise the program to
  329.    correct any fault in this software.

  332. 7 Changes and Bugs
  333.  
  334. The "9980" bug in the four corner index of version 2.0
  335. has been removed. A number of errors in the data have also
  336. been corrected. The maximum size of the character selection
  337. window has been enlarged. The character information window
  338. can now also be closed with a keystroke.
  339.  
  340. CHinDEX has one serious bug which could not be removed up
  341. to now: When used as an accessory, starting an other program
  342. while one of CHinDEXes windows is open will cause a system
  343. crash, sooner rather than later. So, before starting a
  344. program, leave CHinDEX via the "QUIT" button!
  345.
